Local BNP leader among five accused in Netrokona schoolgirl rape and pregnancy case

KENDUA, NETROKONA — A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been accused of repeatedly raping a schoolgirl and recording the assaults to blackmail her for years, leaving the victim six months pregnant. Police have registered a case against five named individuals, including the BNP leader, following allegations of systemic sexual abuse and gang rape.
The victim’s father filed the lawsuit at Kendua Police Station on Tuesday night, naming Rafiqul Islam, 55, as the primary suspect. Authorities have since arrested the second accused in the case, identified as Abu Mia, 50.
Following the allegations, the Kendua Municipal BNP officially relieved Rafiqul Islam of all party positions. A press release issued Wednesday night, signed by Municipal BNP President Khokon Ahmed and General Secretary Moazzem Hossain Khan, stated that the disciplinary action was taken due to the accused’s involvement in unethical activities and violations of party conduct.
According to the case statement, the abuse began in November 2022 when the victim was in the sixth grade. The accused allegedly lured the girl into a residence, raped her, and filmed the act. He subsequently used the footage to threaten the victim, coercing her into repeated sexual encounters. The complaint further alleges that the victim was subjected to gang rape with the assistance of the accused’s associates.
The victim’s family stated that they only became aware of the situation after a video began circulating on social media while the girl was visiting her brother in Chattogram. Upon questioning, the victim disclosed the ordeal to her sister-in-law. When she fell ill on August 18, a medical examination at a private clinic in Chattogram confirmed she was six months pregnant.
The legal complaint, filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act, names eight suspects in total: five individuals identified by name, including three women accused of complicity, and four unidentified persons.
Kendua Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tarikul Islam confirmed that efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are underway. The victim is scheduled to undergo a medical examination at Netrokona Sadar Hospital as part of the ongoing investigation.
