Polytechnic student stabbed to death in Jhenaidah dormitory following dispute over food

A student at Jhenaidah Polytechnic Institute was fatally stabbed on Thursday evening following a dispute over food and grocery shopping at a shared residence in Jhenaidah town.
The victim, 21-year-old Kawsar Ali, was a seventh-semester computer science student and a resident of Boithapara village in Harinakunda Upazila. Police have arrested 18-year-old Likhon, a tenth-grade student at Baribathan Dakhil Madrasa, in connection with the incident.
The altercation occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a residence in the Mahila Collegepara area, where both the victim and the suspect shared a room. According to witnesses and local authorities, the conflict began when Likhon engaged in a heated argument with the mess manager regarding food availability and market duties. When Kawsar intervened, the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation.
Fellow student Al Amin Hossain reported that the tension flared after Kawsar returned from taking an examination and consumed his meal. Likhon reportedly became aggressive toward the manager because he believed there was insufficient food left for him. During the subsequent altercation, Kawsar allegedly struck Likhon with a piece of wood, prompting Likhon to retrieve a knife and stab Kawsar in the back.
Locals rushed the critically injured Kawsar to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. Emergency room physician Nahid Islam Tonni confirmed that the victim had succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge ATM Hasanuzzaman confirmed the arrest of the suspect. He stated that the victim’s body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities noted that further details regarding the investigation will be released once the post-mortem report is finalized.
