Qatar Pledges Energy Security Support to Bangladesh During Foreign Minister Visit to Doha

DOHA — Qatar has pledged to provide comprehensive support to Bangladesh to ensure its energy security amidst ongoing global economic challenges. The assurance was delivered by Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during a meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Md Touhid Hossain in Doha on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka confirmed the development in a press release issued Wednesday evening.

During the bilateral discussions, the Qatari Prime Minister characterized Bangladesh as a brotherly nation, emphasizing Qatar’s commitment to assisting the country in navigating current energy sector difficulties. Foreign Minister Hossain, who is also the President-elect of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, arrived in Doha on Tuesday for a two-day official visit.

In the meeting, Minister Hossain conveyed the well-wishes of the Bangladeshi Prime Minister to the Qatari leadership. He praised Qatar’s constructive and responsible role in fostering regional peace, security, and stability, noting that these contributions extend in significance well beyond the immediate region.

Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani extended his congratulations to Minister Hossain on his election as the President of the 81st UN General Assembly session, pledging Qatar’s continued support and cooperation throughout his tenure. Minister Hossain subsequently extended a formal invitation to the Qatari Prime Minister to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.

The Foreign Minister’s visit included a series of high-level engagements on Tuesday. He met with Qatari Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari to discuss investment, banking, and bilateral cooperation. At the headquarters of QatarEnergy, Minister Hossain held talks with Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, focusing on deepening long-term energy cooperation, specifically regarding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplies.

Additionally, Minister Hossain met with Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi and Minister of Labour Ali bin Samikh Al Marri to address matters of mutual interest.

The Bangladeshi delegation accompanying Minister Hossain includes the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Finance Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam, and the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir.
