Dhallywood Legend and Freedom Fighter Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque Remembered on Birth Anniversary

The legendary Dhallywood actor Akbar Hossain Pathan, affectionately known to millions as “Miya Bhai,” would have celebrated his 78th birthday today, August 18, 2026. Born in Gazipur in 1948, the iconic performer left an indelible mark on both the Bangladeshi film industry and the nation’s political landscape.
Though he lived a life of immense public acclaim, the actor famously ceased celebrating his birthday following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. As a devoted follower of Bangabandhu and a committed political activist, the actor reportedly found it impossible to derive joy from his own birth anniversary after the national tragedy.
Pathan’s entry into the public sphere began long before his cinematic career. A staunch activist during his student years, he played an active role in the historic Six-Point Movement of 1966, the 1969 Mass Uprising, and the 1970 elections. His commitment to the nation culminated in his participation in the 1971 Liberation War.
His film career began with the H. Akbar-directed movie “Jolchobi,” released in 1971, where he starred alongside the celebrated actress Kabori. He gained national prominence in 1975 with his roles in the films “Sujan Sokhi” and “Latial.” His performance in “Latial” earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, and he was later honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 National Film Awards. His extensive filmography includes notable works such as “Noyonmoni,” “Sareng Bou,” “Golapi Ekhon Train-e,” and “Padma Meghna Jamuna.”
Transitioning from the screen to formal governance, Pathan was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-17 constituency in the 2018 national elections. However, his tenure was curtailed by declining health. After a prolonged illness, he passed away while undergoing treatment in Singapore on May 15, 2023.
Despite his passing, the actor remains a central figure in Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, remembered equally for his robust portrayals of rural life on screen and his unwavering dedication to the country’s liberation and political development.
