Director Subhash Ghai Reveals Plan to Deconstruct Aishwarya Rai Bachchans Glamour for Film Taal

Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai has revealed that he consciously sought to dismantle Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s public image to cast her in his 1999 cinematic hit, Taal. Marking the 27th anniversary of the film, Ghai disclosed the creative challenges he faced while shaping the character of Mansi, a small-town girl defined by her passion for dance and ambition.

At the time, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was primarily recognized for her global beauty pageant title and a glamorous public persona. Ghai insisted that he did not want a “Miss World” on screen, but rather an actress who could authentically embody innocence and simplicity. To achieve this, the director imposed a strict condition: he demanded that the actress refrain from using any cosmetics during the first hour of the film.

Ghai recalled telling the actress that he needed to dismantle her established image to serve the character. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reportedly accepted the challenge without hesitation, agreeing to follow his creative direction completely. This collaboration proved pivotal, as the role of Mansi transformed her perception within the industry and established her as a versatile performer.

Regarding the future of the franchise, Ghai confirmed that the script for a sequel, titled Taal 2, is nearing completion. However, the filmmaker remains firm on his artistic philosophy, stating that the project will not be driven by star power. Much like the original film, which focused on character development over the celebrity status of its cast, Ghai intends to maintain a narrative-led approach for the upcoming sequel.
