Land official accused of cancelling mutation in Tanore following alleged bribe dispute

A land mutation in Tanore, Rajshahi, was canceled 43 days after its approval, allegedly due to the victim’s refusal to pay further bribes to a local land official. The victim, 25-year-old Sakil Ahmed, a resident of Gollapara, filed a formal complaint with the Secretary of the Ministry of Land on August 2.
According to the complaint, Sakil Ahmed had initially approached Tanvir Ahmed, an assistant land officer at the Tanore Union Land Office, to initiate the mutation process for his land. The official allegedly demanded 250,000 taka, citing complications in the court documents. After Sakil refused, the official reportedly blocked the application, eventually forcing Sakil to pay 50,000 taka to move the file forward. The mutation for over three acres of land was officially granted on April 7, and the necessary fees were paid.
The conflict escalated after the mutation was approved. Sakil alleged that when he visited the land office to open a holding and collect digital tax receipts, Tanvir Ahmed demanded an additional 5,000 taka. When Sakil refused, the official allegedly delayed the process for five hours and threatened the applicant, warning him that he would regret his actions for the rest of his life.
Weeks later, the heirs discovered that their land record had disappeared from the system. Investigation revealed that the mutation, granted on April 7, had been canceled on May 20 without any prior notice to the owners. Sakil alleged that the Tanore Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Naima Khan, who holds additional charge as the Assistant Commissioner (Land), canceled the mutation under the influence of the accused land official.
When confronted, Naima Khan reportedly told Sakil that the cancellation was a mistake and advised him to submit a fresh application. However, a leaked phone recording appears to capture Tanvir Ahmed admitting to the act, telling Sakil, “I canceled your mutation, and I will fix it. Come to Rajshahi; I will resolve everything myself.”
Responding to the allegations, Tanvir Ahmed denied accepting bribes, labeling the accusations as a conspiracy to frame him. He claimed that the cancellation was a procedural possibility and that his offer to meet in Rajshahi was simply an attempt to resolve the issue through a “mis-case.”
UNO Naima Khan stated that because the affected parties have filed an appeal, the matter is now sub judice. She added that she has scheduled a hearing for both sides but declined to take further administrative action while the appeal process remains ongoing.
