Five police officers injured in mob attack during investigation in Noakhali Companyganj

Five police officers, including an inspector, were injured following an assault during an investigation in Companyganj Upazila of Noakhali on Tuesday. Authorities have arrested seven individuals, including women, in connection with the incident.

The confrontation occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. in the Mawdud School Road area of Ward 9 under Basurhat Municipality. The injured officers—Inspector (Investigation) Manjur Ahmed, Sub-Inspector Arif Mohinuddin, and Constables Mohammad Ishak, Mohammad Yusuf, and Shahadat Hossain—were treated at the Upazila Health Complex.

According to police reports, the team arrived at the scene to investigate a complaint filed by Mohammad Nurul Absar, chairman of the Darul Ihsan Madrasa. The complaint alleged that seven individuals had demanded extortion money, issued death threats, and threatened to cause property damage.

Officials stated that as the investigation began, a dispute broke out between the officers and the accused parties. The situation escalated quickly when the suspects allegedly began throwing bricks and striking the officers with wooden sticks. Additional police reinforcements were dispatched to the area to rescue the injured personnel and restore order.

Police subsequently arrested seven people near the Upazila Government Hospital area: Chemna Khatun, Biyadhuni, Manwara, Ayesha, Oji Ullah, Abu Sufian, and Jaber. A relative of the detainees, Mohammad Babul, claimed that officers had physically assaulted the women at the residence, prompting them to retaliate by throwing bricks at the police.

The investigation stems from a long-standing property dispute between the madrasa administration and the accused, who claim the land as ancestral property and have an ongoing case pending in the Noakhali District and Sessions Judge Court. The madrasa authorities, however, maintain that they own the land and allege that the accused have obstructed construction work while demanding extortion payments.

Companyganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurul Hakim confirmed that the police team was inquiring about alleged damage to CCTV cameras when the sudden assault occurred. He stated that the department is currently preparing to file a formal criminal case against the suspects.
