Dhaka-1 lawmaker Khandaker Abu Ashfaq files police complaint over alleged 100 crore taka loan forgery

Khandaker Abu Ashfaq, the Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-1 constituency, comprising Dohar and Nawabganj, has filed a formal police complaint following allegations that his identity and signature were forged to secure a 100 crore taka loan. The lawmaker, who also serves as the president of the Dhaka District unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), reported the incident to the Nawabganj Police Station on Friday after receiving a copy of a fraudulent loan agreement via WhatsApp.
In the general diary filed with the police, Ashfaq stated that he received credible information suggesting that unidentified individuals had used his National Identity card to fabricate fraudulent documents. He expressed grave concern that the perpetrators might use his forged signature to engage in further criminal activity. The forged documents claimed that Ashfaq intended to borrow 100 crore taka, pledging to repay the sum through various development project contracts.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Ashfaq emphasized that no financial transactions could be legally conducted using his identity without his authorization. He has urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for the fraud.
The parliamentarian noted that he had recently observed a suspicious group moving in his vicinity, and he subsequently received an anonymous message on WhatsApp containing the illicit loan agreement. Similar documents were also reportedly sent to Khayer Hossain, the president of the Kailail Union BNP, who alerted Ashfaq to the situation.
Nawabganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Hanif confirmed that a general diary has been recorded and that an investigation is underway. Authorities stated that the probe aims to determine the motives behind the forgery and to identify the individuals involved in the scheme.
