State Minister for Planning Junaid Saki Warns of Strict Action Against Data Irregularities Ahead of 2026 Watercraft Census

State Minister for Planning Junaid Saki has warned that strict departmental action will be taken against any officials found involved in manipulation, irregularities, or inconsistencies during the collection and management of data.

Addressing the inaugural session of a training program for census coordinators at the divisional, district, and upazila levels on Tuesday, the State Minister emphasized that reliable data is essential for effective policy formulation and socio-economic development. He underscored that there is no substitute for accurate statistics when planning national initiatives.

During his keynote address, Saki stressed the necessity of maintaining professionalism, transparency, and neutrality in data collection. He cautioned that any discrepancies or lapses in professional conduct would lead to immediate and stringent legal repercussions.

The State Minister highlighted the government’s focus on the country’s waterways, noting their importance for cost-effective freight transportation. He stated that the effective utilization and development of water routes are vital for expanding trade and accelerating overall economic activity.

Expressing confidence in the professionalism and technical capabilities of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Saki commended the initiative led by the Ministry of Shipping.

The upcoming Vessel Census 2026, the first of its kind in the nation’s history, aims to establish a safe, orderly, and efficient maritime transport system. The nationwide census will be conducted from August 20 to August 29, under the guidance of the Ministry of Shipping and in collaboration with the BBS.

The inaugural event featured remarks from several officials, including Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Zakaria, Secretary of the Statistics and Informatics Division Md. Firoz Sarkar, Director General of the Department of Shipping Commodore Shafiul Bari, and the Director General of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Shipping, the Department of Shipping, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, and other personnel associated with the census project were also in attendance.
