Rajshahi University student leader refuses to vacate hall despite losing enrollment status

Abdullah Al Nishat, the general secretary of the Motihar Hall unit of Chhatra Dal at the University of Rajshahi, is reportedly residing in his dormitory despite losing his student status due to academic failure. University officials confirmed that Nishat’s seat was cancelled after he was officially dropped from his department, yet he continues to occupy room 232 of the hall.

Nishat, a student from the 2019-20 academic session of the Physics department, faced multiple academic setbacks. According to departmental records, he failed his Bachelor of Science honors part-two examinations twice consecutively. Although he passed in a subsequent attempt, he failed again the following year. Under university regulations, these results rendered him a dropout, effectively terminating his enrollment.

Professor F. Nazrul Islam, chairman of the Physics department, confirmed that Nishat has lost his student status. He noted that while Nishat has petitioned the Academic Council for reinstatement on special grounds, the appeal has not been granted. The former student is reportedly preparing to file a secondary petition.

Hall authorities issued an official order on July 2 signed by the Provost of Motihar Hall, Professor Chamiul Islam. The notice stated that Nishat was expected to enroll as a regular student following the publication of third-year examination results; however, since no record of his re-enrollment existed, he was classified as a dropout and his seat was forfeited.

The order mandated that Nishat settle all outstanding dues and vacate the dormitory by July 15. Despite this deadline passing, Nishat remains in residence.

Nishat acknowledged his continued presence in the hall, claiming he is seeking time from the Provost while he awaits the outcome of his reinstatement application. He argued that his presence does not constitute unauthorized occupation, asserting that he expects to be allowed to stay until a decision regarding his student status is finalized.

Professor Chamiul Islam expressed uncertainty regarding Nishat’s current residency status. The Provost maintained that the seat was revoked due to the lack of valid enrollment data. He clarified that if the student status is not restored, the seat will be reallocated to another candidate, adding that he was unaware Nishat had remained in the hall past the deadline.
