Naval police recover two bodies from Meghna River in Munshiganj as search for third continues

GAZARIA, MUNSHIGANJ — Naval police recovered the bodies of an unidentified man and woman from the Meghna River in the Char Ramzanbeg area of Gazaria Upazila on Sunday. The bodies, which authorities estimate had been in the water for five to seven days, were found floating among water hyacinths at approximately 12:00 p.m.

The grim discovery was initially reported by a local resident, Mohammad Monir Hossain, who had been gathering grass near the riverbank at 7:30 a.m. when he spotted three bodies caught in the vegetation. Following his report to the 999 national emergency service, authorities launched a search operation. While police successfully recovered two bodies, a third remained unaccounted for, potentially having been carried away by the river’s current.

Preliminary investigations suggest the deaths may be the result of foul play. Naval police noted that while the man’s body showed no immediate signs of trauma, the woman’s hands and feet were bound. Investigators are currently treating the case as a possible homicide.

Senior law enforcement officials, including Narayanganj region Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md. Alamgir Hossain and Gazaria Naval Police Inspector Sarajit Kumar Ghosh, oversaw the recovery efforts. According to DIG Alamgir Hossain, the victims do not appear to be local residents. Efforts to identify the deceased are ongoing, with support from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Coast Guard.

The discovery has caused significant alarm among local residents. Nizamuddin, a resident of Char Ramzanbeg, noted that such an incident is unprecedented in the area. Community members have called for a thorough investigation to determine whether the individuals were murdered and discarded in the river or if the bodies drifted from another location. Police confirmed that search operations in the river are continuing to locate the missing third body and to gather further evidence.
