Woman murdered and dismembered in Comilla, tenant arrested with history of child killing

Police in Debidwar, Comilla, recovered the dismembered remains of a woman from behind her residence on Saturday evening, leading to the arrest of a tenant in connection with the homicide.
The victim, identified as 50-year-old Farida Yasmin, was found after her body had been severed into pieces and packed into nine separate plastic bags. Investigators discovered the remains at the property in Choto Alampur within the Debidwar municipal area. Authorities confirmed that while nine packages were recovered, the victim’s head and feet have yet to be located.
Police have arrested Laily Akter, a tenant who had been renting a room in the victim’s house since August 1. Farida Yasmin’s husband, Mofijul Islam, who works in the maritime sector, has filed a formal murder case at the Debidwar Police Station, naming Laily Akter and three others as suspects.
During preliminary interrogation, Laily Akter reportedly confessed to her involvement in the killing and implicated four additional individuals, though police are still verifying those claims. Investigators currently suspect the motive behind the crime was robbery, specifically targeting the victim’s gold ornaments and valuables. The victim, whose two daughters are married, had been living alone at the time of the incident.
Laily Akter is a known figure to local law enforcement with a history of violent crime. She was previously accused in the November 2021 murder of a seven-year-old girl named Fahima in the same area. In that case, investigators alleged that the child was killed after witnessing an illicit relationship between her father, Amir Hossain, and Laily Akter. The child’s body was recovered from beneath the Kachisair bridge approximately one week after she went missing.
Following her arrest in the 2021 case, Laily Akter spent a significant period in custody before recently securing bail. After her release, she relocated to the Chapanagar area of Debidwar before renting the residence from Farida Yasmin.
Officer-in-Charge of Debidwar Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing as police search for the missing remains and verify the involvement of the other named suspects.
