Toddler killed and dozens injured in head-on bus collision on Dhaka-Sylhet highway

A head-on collision between two buses on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet left at least eight people dead and 25 others injured on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred near the Kashikapon area when a Dhaka-bound Unique Paribahan bus collided with a Sylhet-bound Bengal Paribahan bus.
The impact of the collision forced the Unique Paribahan bus off the road and into a roadside ditch. Among the victims was three-year-old Jaifa, who died after being transported to the hospital. Jaifa had been traveling with her parents, Jahangir Alam and Nurunnahar, and her siblings, 16-year-old Jannatul and a younger brother named Mohammad, at the time of the crash.
Jannatul, who sustained minor injuries, recounted the traumatic moments leading up to the accident. She described hearing a loud noise before the bus plunged into the ditch, leaving her parents and siblings critically wounded. While Jahangir Alam and Nurunnahar are currently receiving treatment at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, relatives have yet to inform them of their youngest child’s death. Jahangir, a tire repair businessman from the South Surma area, remains in semi-conscious state with severe head and bodily injuries, while his wife is also undergoing intensive care.
Sherpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman confirmed the death toll, noting that seven passengers died at the scene while one succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the hospital. Authorities stated that the condition of several of the 25 injured passengers remains critical.
Hospital staff and relatives are currently attending to the surviving children as they wait for medical updates on the parents. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with neighbors and friends arriving at the hospital to provide support to the grieving family.
