College student drowns at Coxs Bazar beach after being swept away by strong currents

A 20-year-old student drowned at Cox’s Bazar beach on Friday after being swept away by strong currents. The victim, identified as Md. Yasin, was a second-year higher secondary student at Ramu Government College.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the area fronting a surfing club between the Sugandha Point and Kalatali sections of the beach. Yasin, a native of Satkania in Chittagong, resided with his family in the Peshkarpara Phulbag Road area of Cox’s Bazar town. He was the eldest of three siblings.
According to witnesses, Yasin had arrived at the beach with three friends—Md. Shahid, Md. Sohan, and Md. Walid. While bathing in the sea, Yasin was caught in a sudden, powerful surge and began to sink. His friend, Md. Shahid, attempted to save him by holding his hand; however, the intensity of the current caused Shahid to lose his grip, and Yasin disappeared beneath the waves.
Following the incident, the victim’s friends alerted a nearby police box, prompting a search operation by Sea-Safe lifeguards. Yasin was recovered from the water shortly thereafter and rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead.
Md. Shukkur, a Sea-Safe lifeguard, noted that the group had been swimming in a section of the beach not covered by lifeguard patrols. He warned that the sea is currently volatile, with strong currents, and urged tourists and locals to restrict swimming to designated, lifeguard-monitored safe zones.
Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that an unnatural death case has been filed. The body has been handed over to the victim’s family following the completion of legal procedures.
