BJP Lawmaker Kangana Ranaut Sparks Controversy with Targeted Attacks on Bollywood Peer

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has sparked fresh controversy following a series of disparaging social media posts targeting an unnamed fellow actress. Known for her outspoken nature and frequent political commentary, Ranaut’s latest remarks have drawn widespread backlash for criticizing a peer’s appearance, personal life, and political activism.

In a recent post, Ranaut criticized an unnamed actress for releasing videos regarding the NEET examination protests, labeling her a “jihadist-adjacent” figure while questioning her silence during previous unrest in Jharkhand. She went on to mock the unnamed peer’s fashion choices, comparing her attire—specifically shorts and a backward-facing cap—to that of a “pickpocket.”

Ranaut suggested that the actress’s style and demeanor had deteriorated significantly, implying that her personal relationships may have influenced her current presentation. “My dear co-actress, if your male partner has made you feel like a pickpocket, then I am sorry,” she wrote, offering to assist her peer in reclaiming a more “elegant” image.

In a follow-up video, Ranaut expanded her commentary to address broader ideological shifts in the film industry. She questioned why celebrities who remained neutral on political and religious issues before marriage often adopt hardline leftist ideologies afterward. Drawing a parallel to her own transformation, Ranaut defended her shift toward staunch Hindu nationalist politics, arguing that personal evolution is a right protected under the constitution. She expressed frustration over being criticized for her own ideological trajectory, asserting that she is entitled to her beliefs just as others are to theirs.

While Ranaut did not explicitly name her target, social media users have widely speculated that the comments were directed at actress Sonakshi Sinha. Sinha has been one of the few prominent Bollywood figures to publicly support recent student protests, frequently appearing in the attire—shorts and a cap—that Ranaut specifically mocked.

The remarks have ignited a fierce debate online, drawing sharp rebukes from prominent industry figures including singer Vishal Dadlani and actor Sonu Sood. Critics have highlighted the perceived hypocrisy in Ranaut’s stance, circulating archived photos and film clips of the lawmaker from earlier in her career to challenge her critique of modern fashion and lifestyle choices. Many observers have pointed out that Ranaut, who frequently faced public scrutiny for her own personal life and professional choices in the past, is now applying a standard of conduct to others that she seemingly rejects for herself.
