Court grants seven-day remand for suspect in Dhaka police impersonation robbery case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday granted a seven-day remand for 40-year-old Md. Russel, an alleged member of a sophisticated robbery syndicate accused of masquerading as police to kidnap and rob two businessmen in the capital. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin following a request from investigators seeking a ten-day custodial interrogation.
The arrest of Russel, confirmed by police, follows a violent heist on July 25. According to the case documents, two businessmen—Mohammad Riaz and Ajmir Hossain—were traveling from Uttara to Sherpur with 2.55 million taka intended for a dealership investment. As they reached a bridge in Sector 5 of Uttara, their vehicle was intercepted by a group of five to six individuals traveling in two private cars and a motorcycle who identified themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The assailants forcibly boarded the victims’ car, blindfolded the businessmen, and subjected them to physical abuse. They were later transported to a secluded area in Sector 3, where the robbers seized the cash, the victims’ vehicle, and their mobile phones. The victims were eventually abandoned with their hands and feet bound near the 300-foot road area around 1:00 a.m.
Following a formal complaint filed by Riaz on August 3 at the Uttara West Police Station, investigators tracked down Russel in Uttara late Tuesday night. During the subsequent investigation, police recovered the stolen private car in Gazipur’s Kaliganj. A search of the vehicle yielded a pair of handcuffs marked “Euro Standard,” two electric shock devices, two steel batons, one button mobile phone, and 124,200 taka in cash.
Investigators identified Russel as a habitual offender who has used the guise of law enforcement to execute robberies for an extended period. Police records indicate that he is currently facing multiple charges related to arms and explosives in districts including Mymensingh and Tangail. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to locate the remaining members of the criminal syndicate.
