Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Inaugurates July Uprising Memorial Museum at Former Ganabhaban

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman officially inaugurated the July Uprising Memorial Museum in Dhaka on Wednesday, dedicating the site to preserving the history of the 2024 mass movement that reshaped the nation’s political landscape. The ceremony, held at the museum’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar premises, commenced with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, followed by prayers for the martyrs of the revolution.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by his daughter, Zaima Rahman, during the proceedings. Attendees were presented with a documentary detailing the progression of the uprising, emphasizing the widespread public participation and the eventual triumph of the movement. Prominent figures, including former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, and the Prime Minister’s information and cultural adviser Zahed Ur Rahman, were present to mark the occasion.
The museum, established within the former official residence of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, represents the culmination of efforts to memorialize the events of July 2024. Although the project faced initial administrative hurdles, it reached fruition on the second anniversary of the uprising. The site serves as a testament to the anti-fascist struggle, housing artifacts and narratives designed to educate future generations on the sacrifices made by students and citizens during the push for democratic reform.
The transition of the residence into a museum follows the August 5, 2024, fall of the previous government, which led to the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent installation of an interim administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus on August 8.
While Wednesday’s inaugural session was restricted to invited guests, the museum is scheduled to open its doors to the general public beginning Thursday.
