Yunus hails unity of July uprising on second anniversary of political transition

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus marked the second anniversary of the July uprising on Wednesday, hailing the movement as a historic turning point for the nation’s democratic aspirations, justice, and human rights. In a statement issued to commemorate the 2024 revolution that led to the collapse of the Awami League government, Yunus described the month as a defining chapter in the country’s history, underscoring the collective power of a unified citizenry.

The uprising reached its zenith on August 5, 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country. Following her departure, an interim government led by Professor Yunus was sworn in on August 8. Reflecting on the intensity of the struggle, Yunus remarked that the events of July served as a powerful reminder of how a nation can unite against systemic injustice, transforming what once seemed to be impenetrable power structures.

During his address, the Chief Adviser paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the protests, while expressing profound gratitude to the thousands who sustained injuries, including many who suffered permanent disabilities or the loss of eyesight. He lauded the movement as a truly national endeavor, highlighting the diverse participation of students from schools, colleges, madrasas, and public and private universities.

Yunus further acknowledged the critical contributions of citizens from all walks of life, including teachers, parents, journalists, photographers, artists, and cultural activists who documented the struggle. He noted that the bravery of working-class individuals, including rickshaw pullers and laborers, alongside the tireless efforts of medical professionals working under hazardous conditions, were essential to the success of the uprising. He also recognized the vital support provided by the global Bangladeshi diaspora.

Special recognition was given to the women who participated in the protests with immense courage, noting that their defiance would serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations. As the nation reflects on the second anniversary of the movement, Professor Yunus called for a renewed commitment to the democratic, economic, and social progress initiated since the fall of the previous regime, urging the public to maintain the unity that secured their victory.
