Bangladesh marks July Uprising Day with nationwide commemorations and memorial tributes

Bangladesh is observing “July Mass Uprising Day 2026” on Wednesday with a series of nationwide events honoring those who participated in the historic movement. President and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued official messages commemorating the day, as ceremonies take place across all 64 districts to pay tribute to the movement’s martyrs at dedicated memorial sites.
The commemorative events began with the official inauguration of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at 9:00 a.m. Following the opening, a formal reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka to honor the families of the martyrs and the movement’s veterans. Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is scheduled to attend the ceremony as the chief guest to lead discussions on the historical significance of the uprising.
The government has coordinated extensive public engagement initiatives, including special supplements in newspapers and the release of commemorative postage stamps. Photographic exhibitions and screenings of documentaries regarding the movement will be hosted at prominent locations throughout Dhaka and other major city corporations. State-run media, including Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar, alongside private radio and television stations, are broadcasting specialized programs throughout the day to document the uprising.
Educational institutions across the country are hosting seminars, essay competitions, and art programs to ensure younger generations understand the legacy of the movement. Similarly, Bangladesh embassies abroad have organized local commemorative events. Religious institutions have been encouraged to hold special prayers and supplications to honor the victims.
In a move to increase accessibility, all government and autonomous museums will remain open to the public free of charge from morning until evening. Public and private entertainment venues will also provide free entry for children throughout the day. Furthermore, authorities have organized festive meals for residents of public hospitals, correctional facilities, orphanages, and rehabilitation centers nationwide.
Public spaces, including major city thoroughfares and traffic islands, have been decorated with the national flag, banners, and decorative lighting at local monuments to mark the occasion. These measures follow a series of preparatory events led by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which included an exhibition and publication launch held at the Information Bhaban on July 30, presided over by Minister Jahir Uddin Swapan and attended by Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
