Folk singer Mujib Pardeshi jailed following conviction in fraud case

Renowned folk singer and music director Mujib Paradeshi has been sent to prison following a court order issued in Dhaka on Tuesday. The musician, whose legal name is Mujibur Rahman Molla, was taken into custody after a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court enforced an outstanding warrant stemming from a conviction in a check dishonor case.
Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the development, stating that the court ordered the singer’s incarceration after he was presented before the bench. During the proceedings, the singer was not represented by legal counsel, while the prosecution successfully opposed a motion for bail.
The legal action originated from a 2022 complaint filed by Idris Ali Biswas in a Magura court regarding a bounced check valued at 1 million taka. On March 15, 2023, the Magura Second Joint District and Sessions Judge Court delivered a verdict, sentencing Paradeshi to one year of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine equal to the amount of the check. Because the artist was absent during the initial sentencing, the court had issued an arrest warrant at that time.
Following the execution of that warrant, officers from the Uttara West Police Station apprehended the singer in the capital on Monday. Paradeshi, who rose to significant national prominence during the 1980s for his contributions to Bengali folk music, now faces the fulfillment of his sentence.
