Renowned flute maestro Ustad Azizul Islam mesmerized audiences Friday evening, transforming the Jhor Hossain Chowdhury Auditorium at the National Press Club into a sanctuary of classical melody. The event, organized by the Press Club, drew a dedicated crowd of music enthusiasts and club members to celebrate the intricate artistry of the subcontinent’s celebrated instrumentalist.
The evening commenced with welcoming remarks from General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, followed by an inaugural address by Club President and poet Hasan Hafiz, who offered a formal tribute to the master musician. Cultural Sub-committee Convener Kazi Rownak Hossain moderated the proceedings, which were attended by key club officials, including Treasurer Bakhtiar Rana and executive members Quader Gani Chowdhury and Syed Abdal Ahmad.
Ustad Azizul Islam opened his performance with a brief *alap* in Raga Shyam Kalyan, subsequently showcasing his technical prowess through compositions set to *jhaptal* and *teental*. The repertoire spanned a wide emotional spectrum, featuring the delicate notes of Raga Hamsadhwani, followed by evocative improvisations in Raga Jaijaiwanti, Mishra Pilu, and Mishra Khamaj. The performance reached its emotive climax with the profound depths of Raga Darbari Kanada and the melodic elegance of Raga Charukesi.
