Three unexploded mortar shells unearthed at construction site in Laxmipur

Construction workers in Lakshmipur’s Ramgati upazila unearthed three unexploded mortar shells on Wednesday while excavating a road near the A.S.M. Abdur Rob Government College. The discovery occurred around 12:30 p.m. during routine utility work to upgrade water supply lines along the TAT Office Road.
The workers initially noticed three metallic objects buried approximately two to three feet underground. Suspecting the items were explosive devices, the crew immediately halted operations and evacuated the area, sparking alarm among local residents.

Ramgati police arrived shortly thereafter to establish a security perimeter, cordoning off the site and warning members of the public to maintain a safe distance. Officer-in-Charge Litan Dewan stated that while the items are tentatively identified as mortar shells, their origin remains unclear. He noted that the lack of significant corrosion on the devices is unusual for items buried for an extended period, creating uncertainty regarding their age and source.
Local authorities have notified the military and the police bomb disposal unit to investigate the scene. Experts are expected to conduct a formal assessment before safely transporting the shells to a secure location for controlled detonation.
