Man arrested in Dhaka for alleged marriage fraud and rape of Rangpur college student

Police in Rangpur have arrested a 26-year-old man on charges of rape and fraud following a two-month manhunt. The suspect, identified as Azmain Abdullah of Haragach, was apprehended Monday evening near Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with the assistance of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

According to investigators, the case stems from a complaint filed by a college student on May 6. The victim alleged that Abdullah, who was already married, concealed his marital status to initiate a romantic relationship with her via social media. The defendant reportedly coerced the student into a fraudulent marriage ceremony on December 2 last year, using a signed stamp paper near the Rangpur court premises and two witnesses to deceive her.

Following the purported wedding, the victim alleged that Abdullah took her to a house in the Dhumgara area and subsequently to various locations, where he repeatedly engaged in sexual relations under the guise of marriage. The student’s suspicions were confirmed on April 24 when she visited Abdullah’s home to demand legal marriage documentation. It was then that the suspect admitted to his existing marriage and refused to recognize their union.

Haragach Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashok Chouhan stated that when the victim confronted him about the deception, Abdullah attempted to bribe her into silence. He further allegedly threatened to circulate private videos of the victim if she continued to pursue the matter or report the incident to authorities.

Following a court order, a rape case was formally registered against Abdullah on May 12. He had been in hiding since the filing of the charges, prompting a sustained police investigation. Following his arrest in Dhaka, he was transported to Rangpur and remanded to judicial custody by a local court on Tuesday afternoon.
