NCP leader sparks controversy after mistakenly using Joy Bangla slogan at Gaibandha rally

A local leader of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) in Gaibandha has sparked controversy after inadvertently using the slogan “Joy Bangla” during a public meeting on Thursday. Shafijol Islam, the party’s convener for the Sadullapur upazila branch, concluded his speech at the Shahid Minar square by uttering the slogan, which has become politically charged in the wake of the recent national uprising, before immediately attempting to correct himself.
The incident was captured in a 58-second video that has since circulated widely on social media. In the footage, Islam is seen addressing the crowd regarding his candidacy for the upcoming union parishad election in Jamalpur. After soliciting support from the attendees and expressing confidence in his electoral prospects, he ended his address with the words, “Khoda Hafez, Joy Bangla.” He was immediately heard saying “Sorry, sorry” before exiting the stage.

The rally was held as NCP leaders were returning from Pirganj, Rangpur, where they had visited the grave of Abu Sayed, one of the first martyrs of the July mass uprising, on the second anniversary of his death. Several senior party figures, including NCP’s northern regional organizer Sarjis Alam and chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, attended the event and addressed the gathered supporters.
When contacted for comment, Khademul Islam, the convener of the NCP’s Gaibandha district branch, sought to dismiss the incident as a slip of the tongue. He stated that Shafijol Islam had no previous history of political activism and was selected for his leadership role due to his local popularity. He added that because Islam was unaccustomed to speaking before large audiences, he inadvertently used the slogan by mistake. Shafijol Islam could not be reached for further comment.
