Bangladesh Mandates Forced Retirement for 33 Senior Police Officers

The Bangladeshi government has mandated the compulsory retirement of 33 high-ranking police officers, a move that continues the sweeping administrative overhaul initiated following the collapse of the Awami League government on August 5. According to a notification issued Sunday by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the order takes effect immediately.

The list of officers removed from service includes 14 Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), 18 Additional Deputy Inspector Generals, and one Superintendent of Police. Many of these officials held critical positions during the tenure of the previous administration. Following the student-led mass uprising that ousted the former government, these officers were initially withdrawn from their units and attached to police headquarters; however, their standing has since shifted, with two currently under arrest and several others remaining in hiding.

The group of retired DIGs includes Molla Nazrul Islam and Md. Saiful Islam—both of whom are currently in custody—alongside Miraz Uddin Ahmed, Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, S M Mostak Ahmed Khan, Jihadul Kabir, Moinul Haque, Md. Iliyas Sharif, Shyamal Kumar Nath, Md. Zakir Hossain Khan, Md. Shah Abid Hossain, Md. Jamil Hassan, Md. Mahbubur Rahman, and Md. Moniruzzaman.

The list of Additional DIGs features Md. Barkatullah Khan, A T M Mojahidul Islam, Md. Anwar Hossain Khan, Moha. Moniruzzaman, Md. Mehedul Karim, Md. Alamgir Kabir, Md. Rashidul Hasan, Sanjay Kumar Kundu, Md. Nizamul Haque Molla, S M Emran Hossain, Muhammad Saidur Rahman Khan, Dr. Shamsunnahar, Molla Jahangir Hossain, Saifullah Al Mamun, Khan Muhammad Rezwan, Md. Sajid Hossain, Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, and Mashrukur Rahman Khaled. The single Superintendent of Police affected by the directive is Abdullah Aref.

The ministry stated that the retired officers will be entitled to all retirement benefits in accordance with existing regulations. This action follows a pattern of recent government measures aimed at restructuring the police force, which has seen numerous top-tier officers forced into retirement since the interim government assumed power in August.
