Police detain man for shouting slogans at site of Tarique Rahman rally in Moulvibazar

Security forces in Srimangal have taken a 30-year-old man into custody following an altercation at the site of a planned government event. The incident occurred Tuesday evening near the mini-stadium adjacent to the Victoria High School grounds, where preparations are underway for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s maiden visit to Moulvibazar since assuming office.
The detainee, identified as Sohel Rana of Motiganj, was observed shouting political slogans associated with the Awami League while wearing a t-shirt featuring the Prime Minister’s likeness. Witnesses reported that Rana began chanting “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu” loudly, prompting a physical confrontation with bystanders at the venue. Police arrived shortly thereafter to intervene and escort him to the Srimangal police station.
Sub-Inspector Harun, a spokesperson for the local police, indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the individual may have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. Authorities have confirmed that Rana remains in police custody, though official comments from the officer-in-charge of the Srimangal station were not immediately available.
The Prime Minister’s visit, scheduled for Wednesday, is centered on the distribution of family cards to local residents. According to government and party sources, the Prime Minister is expected to arrive via Sylhet Osmani International Airport before traveling to Moulvibazar. He is slated to conduct distribution ceremonies at both the Victoria High School grounds in Srimangal and the Moulvibazar Government High School field in the district headquarters.
In anticipation of the Prime Minister’s arrival, local administration and party organizers have implemented significant logistical preparations. Security across the city has been notably intensified to manage the large-scale public event and ensure the safety of the proceedings.
