Measles outbreak claims 643 lives in Bangladesh as infections surpass 94,000

Health authorities reported another child death attributed to measles symptoms within the last 24 hours, continuing a persistent trend of infections that has claimed hundreds of lives since mid-March. According to a report released Friday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatality occurred in Khulna.
The new data, covering the period from Thursday morning to Friday morning, brings the total death toll since March 15 to 643. This figure includes 551 children who succumbed to symptoms associated with the disease, alongside 92 deaths where measles was confirmed as the clinical cause.
Medical monitoring indicates that the virus continues to circulate at a significant rate. Over the past 24 hours, health officials identified 1,153 cases involving either confirmed measles or related symptoms. Specifically, there were 126 confirmed cases of the virus reported during this timeframe, while 1,027 individuals presented with clinical symptoms.
Since the surveillance began on March 15, the nation has documented 84,266 cases featuring symptoms of the disease, with 10,185 of those cases confirmed as measles.
Clinical capacity remains under pressure, as a total of 68,934 patients have been admitted to hospitals with measles-like symptoms since the start of the outbreak. Of those patients, 65,275 have successfully recovered and been discharged, according to the health department’s latest figures.
