Shahjalal University Authorities Hand Over Student to Police Over Alleged Offensive Remarks on Facebook

University authorities handed over a teenager to the police for allegedly making a series of “offensive comments” on Facebook targeting student leaders and students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet.

The university proctor, Mokhlesur Rahman, confirmed the incident on Monday evening. The teenager is a resident of the area adjacent to the university.

According to Rahman, the youth was repeatedly posting on university-related Facebook pages, with 15 to 20 posts daily. Students apprehended him and brought him to the proctor’s office, after which he was transferred to police custody. The posts contained derogatory remarks about student leaders and students, and his profile showed 177 pending posts across various groups.

Student organization leaders reported that they detained the teenager in the area adjacent to the university on Monday evening. Subsequently, some leaders and activists of the student wing brought him to the proctor’s office, from where the proctor handed him over to the police.

The president of the university’s student wing, Rahat Zaman, stated that the individual had been posting malicious and false propaganda against their organization in various social media groups for an extended period, targeting both current students and alumni. He also indicated suspicion of involvement by certain university organizations in these activities.

An assistant sub-inspector with Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet, Anuj Kumar, stated that he responded to a call from the proctorial body. The proctor informed him that the teenager had posted content on Facebook allegedly critical of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the government, and exhibiting misogyny, including the use of obscene language against women. Allegations of sedition were also mentioned. Following this, the teenager was taken to the police station. Several university students have since arrived at the station to file complaints against him.
