The police wants a separate pay scale like the armed forces and the judiciary

The policemen have raised some demands including introduction of separate pay scale (salary structure) like Army, Navy and Air Force and Judiciary Department.
On the occasion of Police Week-2026, these demands were presented to Prime Minister Tariq Rahman at the Police Week Welfare Parade organized at Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

Several senior police officers who were present at Ruddhdwar Kalyan parade have confirmed the fact that the demands have been raised.
According to related sources, a senior police official drew the attention of the Prime Minister and said that separate pay scales are in operation in the army, navy, air force and judicial departments. He raised the demand of giving individual pay scale to the police.

According to the sources of the police, the government order for the construction of a new building for the police is closed. It is demanded to issue a new allocation order for the construction of those buildings. At the same time, it has been demanded to increase the allocation for the investigation of the case, it is said that currently five thousand rupees are allocated to the investigation officer for the investigation of each case. The investigation cannot be completed at this cost. Apart from this, demands have been made to provide interest free motorcycle loans to Sub Inspectors (SIs).
A policeman demanded that they should be promoted one step higher when they retire. ie Constable as Honorary to the rank of Honorary Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI); ASI should be promoted as Honorary Sub-Inspector (SI) and SI as Honorary Inspector (Inspector).
A police official said, the police always have to do overtime (extra work). Policemen should be paid extra for duty performed outside working hours.
Another member demanded that more modern facilities be provided at the Divisional City Hospital and Dhaka’s Rajarbagh Central Hospital for police treatment. There have also been demands for separate educational institutions for police children.
Several senior officers of the police who participated in the welfare parade told Prothom Alo that after raising the demands, the Prime Minister assured that he would look into the matter of giving interest-free loans to the policemen to buy motorcycles. Apart from this, he assured to consider the demands related to overtime (extra work remuneration) and police hospital.
The Prime Minister said about setting up a separate educational institution for police children, it can be done at the police’s own place. He advised Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Home Secretary Manzoor Morshed Chowdhury to look into the matter.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police Headquarters Media Wing AHM Shahadat Hossain told Prothom Alo that the Prime Minister and Home Minister have assured to accept most of the demands of the policemen in the welfare parade.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said to fulfill their logical demands considering the financial coherence and capacity of the government in order to develop the police as a public welfare-oriented and modern force. This was informed in a press release of the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.
At the welfare parade, the Home Minister said, many police constables retire after serving for 40 years, they do not get promoted. For that purpose some number of policemen will be promoted at the time of retirement on consideration of special policy and satisfactory service record. The government is considering providing allowances to policemen on overtime duty based on a special policy. In this case overtime allowance may be considered from Police Inspector to Constable.
The Home Minister said that central and divisional police hospitals will be made more modern and up-to-date by increasing facilities and if necessary, more advanced hospitals will be constructed. The present government is sincere in the construction of buildings, offices and housing problems of various police units.
The Home Minister also said that existing laws will be revised and updated to completely stop mob culture. At this time, the minister ordered the police force to fulfill its duties according to public expectations and wishes.
Complications have arisen with the awarding of medals during the police week ceremony. According to police sources, the process of awarding medals was suspended at the last minute due to objections and complaints of irregularities in the list.
The ‘Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM)’, ‘President’s Police Medal (PPM)’ and ‘BPM-Seba’ and ‘PPM-Seba’ medals are awarded every year in recognition of bravery and gallantry and for meritorious contribution in solving important cases, crime control, efficiency, devotion to duty, integrity and disciplined conduct.
Additional Inspector General of Police Headquarters (Additional IGP) and Convener of Medal Committee Khondkar Rafiqul Islam told Prothom Alo that 115 people were listed to be awarded medals like every year. Six of them have already been awarded medals. Among others named in the list, 107 officers also participated in the Police Week exercise. Later on last Saturday night the news of the suspension of the medal came out.
A senior police officer who did not wish to be named in this regard told Prothom Alo that the official order was not issued on Saturday night due to objections and irregularities in the list of medals. The matter is under process. This medal will be given to the deserving ones after verification.
Last year during the interim government 62 people were given BPM and PPM. Previous year in February 2024 during the Awami League government, 400 people were given BPM and PPM medals. In 2023, 117 people were awarded the medal and in 2022, 230 people were awarded the medal.
