Bogura: Suspect Beaten to Death While Fleeing After Theft of Cash, Jewelry

A man identified as Salim Fokir, 35, was beaten to death on suspicion of theft early Friday morning in the Chatuah Matallpara village of Shibganj Upazila, Bogura.

Local residents are alleged to have carried out the killing following accusations of a break-in and theft at the home of Gopal Chandra in the same village. The deceased, Salim Fokir, was a resident of Peelkhonj area in Kahalu Upazila.

According to local sources, a group of thieves entered Gopal Chandra’s home on Thursday night and attempted to flee with cash and gold ornaments. The household raised an alarm, prompting nearby villagers to apprehend Salim Fokir. An enraged mob then proceeded to beat him to death.

Purnima Saha, daughter-in-law of Gopal Chandra, stated that the intruders gained access by cutting through a wall and subsequently held the residents at knifepoint, stealing cash and gold ornaments. She reported that approximately 350,000 Bangladeshi Taka and eight bhori (a unit of gold weight) of gold jewelry were taken, along with jewelry worn by her. Villagers apprehended one suspect as the perpetrators tried to escape.

Gopal Chandra, the homeowner, claimed that Salim Fokir and his accomplices stole 350,000 Taka and eight and a half bhori of gold ornaments before attempting to flee.

The Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station confirmed that the deceased, Salim Fokir, had nine pending cases against him in various police stations, including charges of theft, robbery, and mugging. The body has been recovered and sent to the morgue at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
