Workshop on Modern Mushroom Cultivation at IUB

A training workshop on modern mushroom cultivation methods was held with the participation of 20 mushroom growers and entrepreneurs from different parts of the country. Last Monday, in a workshop organized by the Department of Life Sciences of the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), mushroom growers presented their experiences and problems.

Mushrooms are a potential crop from increasing nutritional value to source of income for marginal families. But two major obstacles to its spread have long remained—harmful fungal infections and proper marketing.

Jibunnahar Khandkar, Associate Professor of IUB’s Department of Life Sciences, has developed a new method to combat fungal infections after nearly three years of research. It prevents the spread of harmful fungi to increase production and is also safe for the environment and human health.

The workshop had two objectives—to answer entrepreneurs’ questions about the new approach and improve it with their feedback; Also giving them practical idea about sustainable marketing methods.

Rezaul Karim Siddique, media personality and host of ‘Mati O Manush’ program, was present as a special guest in the inaugural session.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed, founder of Bogra’s Priyajan Mushroom Foundation, associated with mushroom cultivation for 20 years, said the dropout rate of entrepreneurs in mushroom cultivation is 99.9 percent. Among the once hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs, only a handful of entrepreneurs continue to grow mushrooms.

IUB Vice-Chancellor Professor Daniel W. Lund, School of Environment and Life Sciences Dean K Ayaz Rabbani and Head of Life Sciences Department Mahmudul Hasan also spoke at the inauguration ceremony.

Ikramul Hasan, Head of Human Resource Management Department of IUB, discussed the potential of e-commerce as a sustainable marketing method.
