A Bangladeshi laborer named Mojibur Rahman (35) was killed in a coal quarry in Meghalaya across the border of Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila. His body reached the country on Thursday evening. Later, the police sent the body to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Mojibur Rahman is the son of Altu Mia of Lakma village bordering Sripur North Union of Tahirpur Upazila.

According to family sources, some laborers along with Mojibur Rahman entered Naklam area of ​​Meghalaya through Balighat border area last Sunday. They were working in a coal quarry there. During coal extraction yesterday afternoon, suddenly coal collapsed from above inside the quarry. In this, Mojibur got trapped inside the pit and suffered severe head injuries. Although the other workers who were with him managed to get out quickly, Mujibur could not be rescued alive. Later colleagues recovered his body.

On hearing the news, the relatives brought the body from across the border on Thursday evening. Then around eight o’clock in the night, Tahirpur police station sent the body to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Local residents complain that the people of Lakma village are illegally entering Meghalaya through Baliaghat area of ​​the border and are involved in coal mining. They are often victims of accidents while taking part in these activities risking their lives.

Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur police station, said the body has been sent to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem. Preparations are underway to take legal action in this incident.

Lieutenant Colonel AKM Zakaria Qadir, the commander of 28th battalion of BGB in Sunamganj, said that the accident took place after illegally crossing the border to work on coal. Necessary action will be taken after looking into the matter.
