Afghan pacer on deathbed in Indian hospital

Shapoor Zadran, one of the architects of the rise of Afghanistan cricket and former pace star, is fighting with death in the ICU of a hospital in Delhi, India. The 38-year-old left-arm pacer is suffering from a rare and life-threatening disease called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and other physical complications.
He was brought to India for treatment in January this year. Initially his white blood cell count was severely reduced and complications from a previous spinal surgery.
A recent bone marrow test revealed HLH in her body. Which is damaging different parts of the body. Besides, his immune system is currently very weak due to tuberculosis and dengue infection.
When the news of Shapur’s critical condition spread, the cricket world was in mourning. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi spoke to his family and wrote on social media, “You were a fighter on the field, I know you will win this fight too.”
Besides, many star cricketers including Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Umar Akmal wished him a speedy recovery.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board is currently covering his medical expenses and Rashid Khan has provided special assistance in processing his visa.
The winning run in Afghanistan’s historic victory over Scotland in the 2015 World Cup came from Shapoor’s bat. The pacer, who retired from international cricket in January last year, has taken 80 wickets in 80 international matches for Afghanistan. He took 43 wickets in ODIs and 37 wickets in T20Is.
