Unattended Tea Stall in Jhenaidah Operates Successfully on Honesty and Mutual Trust

A tea shop in Jhenaidah’s Harinakundu Upazila has become a local landmark, operating for the past four years entirely on the principles of mutual trust and honesty. Located in Charatala Bazar, the shop remains open without a clerk or owner present, as customers serve themselves and settle their own bills.
The owner of the establishment, Shamsher Ali, a resident of the nearby Bhalki village, balances the shop alongside other business ventures. Each morning, Ali arrives to open the premises, organize the stock, and light the stove before departing. He returns twice more during the day—once in the afternoon and once at night—to collect the earnings and close the shop.
Visitors to the shop often take charge of preparing tea for themselves and others present. During a recent visit, Harun-or-Rashid, 65, was observed preparing tea for fellow customers, none of whom were employees. Customers typically calculate the cost of their refreshments, place the money in a designated spot, and depart. If a customer lacks the funds at the time of consumption, they keep a record and return later to complete the payment.
Local residents report that instances of theft or evasion are virtually non-existent. Matleb Hossain, a frequent customer from Payradanga village, noted that when he craves tea, he simply makes it himself and serves others who arrive, ensuring that everyone’s bill is accounted for before he leaves. Another local, Afangir Hossain, echoed these sentiments, noting that the community values the convenience and the integrity fostered by the owner’s business model.
Ali turned to this unique system after finding that his daily personal expenses in the market were rising and that he lacked reliable help to run the shop full-time. He acknowledged that while he has a son, the young man is uninterested in managing the tea stall. Consequently, Ali opted to rely on the conscience of his patrons, a decision that nets him between 400 and 500 taka in daily revenue.
The shop has drawn admiration from the wider community, with many residents noting that such displays of integrity are increasingly rare. The operation has become a local symbol of social harmony, demonstrating how trust between a business owner and the public can simplify daily life while reinforcing communal values.
