Teacher suspended following sexual harassment allegations at Rangpur primary school

GANGACHARA, RANGPUR — An assistant teacher at a government primary school in Gangachara has been suspended following allegations of sexually harassing a student. The incident sparked a seven-hour standoff on Wednesday, during which angry parents and local residents confined the school’s headmaster, staff, and a visiting education official to the campus.
The tension escalated Wednesday morning when the accused teacher, identified as Reajul Islam, attempted to enter the school premises. He was confronted by parents but managed to flee the scene. In response, protesters blockaded the school, trapping the teaching staff and Upazila Education Officer Sayla Jesmin Sayeed, who had arrived to address the situation.
Police intervened at approximately 5:30 p.m. to rescue the trapped individuals and disperse the crowd. Officers remain deployed at the school site to prevent further unrest.
According to the child’s family, the alleged harassment occurred on August 31 during classroom hours. The victim reported the incident to her family upon returning home, after which the teacher reportedly stopped attending school until his attempted return on Wednesday.
District Primary Education Officer A.M. Shahjahan Siddique confirmed that the accused teacher has been placed under temporary suspension following a formal written complaint submitted by the victim’s father. Siddique stated that a departmental investigation will follow to determine further disciplinary action.
Sayla Jesmin Sayeed, the Upazila Education Officer, confirmed receipt of the formal complaint and pledged a thorough inquiry into the matter. Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Sobur verified that all school personnel were safely evacuated following the lengthy blockade.
