Driver Killed and Nine Injured in Collision Between Autorickshaw and Private Car in Hathazari

A collision between a private car and a compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered auto-rickshaw in Hathazari Upazila on Wednesday left one person dead and nine others injured.
The accident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. in front of Chariya Board School in Mirzapur Union. The driver of the auto-rickshaw, 38-year-old Muhammad Ershad, a resident of Ward No. 1 of Mirzapur Union, was pronounced dead by attending physicians after being transported to the local Upazila Health Complex.
The victims included four students who were returning home after completing their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. The students have been identified as Md. Tausif, Md. Mahin, Md. Fahim, and Md. Shamim. Five other individuals—identified as Isha Akatar, Md. Alamgir, Rokeya Akatar, Md. Hasan, and Md. Belal—also sustained injuries in the incident.
According to witnesses and law enforcement, the private car, which was traveling toward Fatikchhari, collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw, which was heading toward Hathazari. The impact caused the auto-rickshaw to overturn, trapping the passengers and driver beneath the wreckage. Both vehicles were severely damaged in the collision.
Local residents conducted an initial rescue operation, transporting the injured to the Upazila Health Complex. Following emergency treatment, the victims were transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for further care. Medical officials reported that six of the nine survivors are in critical condition.
Officer-in-Charge of Nazirhat Highway Police Station, Mohammad Azizur Rahman, confirmed that the driver died at the scene. He stated that the damaged vehicles have been seized and taken into police custody. The body of the deceased driver will be handed over to his family following an autopsy.
