Search Operation Underway for Missing New Zealand Teenager Following Boat Capsizing off Coxs Bazar Coast

A search and rescue operation is underway in the Bay of Bengal near Cox’s Bazar after a wooden boat carrying a New Zealand family capsized on Tuesday, leaving a 16-year-old boy missing.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. near the Sonadia channel estuary. According to local authorities, the family of four was traveling from the Nazirartek coast toward Sonadia Island when their vessel was struck by large waves, causing it to overturn.

Local fishermen in the vicinity witnessed the accident and immediately intervened, rescuing three members of the family. The survivors were identified as Edward, 74, Bella, 36, and Ralph, 13. They were subsequently handed over to the Coast Guard and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

The missing teenager has been identified as Albert. Despite an extensive search operation conducted by the Coast Guard and the Fire Service that continued until 5:00 p.m., the boy remains unaccounted for.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Officer-in-Charge of the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the details of the incident, stating that the family had been staying in Cox’s Bazar and touring the surrounding islands of Maheshkhali and Sonadia for several days.

Senior Station Officer of the Cox’s Bazar Fire Service, Dolan Acharya, stated that a specialized rescue team, including divers, has been deployed to the site. The search operation is focused on the Maheshkhali channel area. Efforts to locate the missing teenager are expected to continue as conditions permit.
