Two Police Officers Withdrawn After Being Assaulted During Investigation at Childrens Funeral in Natore

Two police officers were assaulted by a mob in Gurudaspur, Natore, on Tuesday night while attempting to conduct inquest reports on the bodies of two children who had drowned earlier that day. Following the incident, both officers—Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar and Constable Rakib Hossain—were withdrawn from the Gurudaspur Police Station and reassigned to the district police lines.
The incident occurred at Shyampur village as funeral prayers for the two victims were underway. Nine-year-old Farhan Hossain, son of Fazlur Rahman, and nine-year-old Lam Hossain, son of Bablu Hossain, had drowned earlier in the afternoon while bathing in the Nandakuja River. Their bodies were recovered by a local fisherman.
Tensions escalated during the funeral when the two officers arrived and attempted to remove the burial shrouds to document the bodies for mandatory inquest reports. The action sparked immediate outrage among the gathered mourners, leading to a heated argument and subsequent physical confrontation between the crowd and the police.
Seeking refuge from the mob, the two officers retreated into a local shop. They were eventually rescued by a reinforcement team dispatched from the Gurudaspur Police Station. Both officers received initial medical treatment at the Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex for their injuries.
Riazul Hasan, the investigation inspector at Gurudaspur Police Station, confirmed the reassignment of the officers following directives from the Superintendent of Police’s office. Some residents reported that many mourners fled the scene prematurely due to fears of potential arrests following the clash.
Natore Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shariful Haque stated that an internal inquiry found professional lapses in how the officers conducted the investigation, necessitating their immediate transfer to the police lines.
