Five fishermen remain missing after trawler sinks in Bay of Bengal

A fishing trawler named FB Barkat capsized in the Bay of Bengal on Monday afternoon, leaving five fishermen missing and sparking an ongoing search operation. The vessel, carrying 13 crew members, went down approximately 50 kilometers south of Kuakata.

According to Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Trawler Owners Association, the vessel sank after being overwhelmed by rough waves. Another fishing trawler operating in the area successfully rescued eight of the crew members at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Monday.

The five missing fishermen include Md. Belal, Md. Nur Alam, and Md. Ibrahim, all of whom are residents of Patharghata Upazila in Barguna. The identities of the remaining two missing individuals have not yet been confirmed.

Efforts to locate the missing crew members are underway. The association has dispatched another vessel, FB Zahura Khatun, to the site to conduct search and rescue operations.

Patharghata Upazila Executive Officer Tapash Pal confirmed that local authorities have been notified of the incident. He stated that the administration is monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to assist in the recovery mission.
