Chief Election Commissioner Says Local Government Election Dates Depend on Multiple Factors

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stated on Monday that the schedule for local government elections remains undecided, noting that the timing depends on a variety of logistical and environmental factors.

Speaking to reporters following an Executive Leadership Dialogue at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon, the CEC emphasized that the commission will only proceed once all relevant stakeholders are fully prepared. He clarified that the commission’s readiness is contingent not only on its own internal processes but also on the mobilization of law enforcement agencies.

The commission is currently in the process of amending certain laws and regulations governing local government elections. Proposals have been submitted to the relevant ministry for vetting, as the commission must coordinate with the government to ensure adequate security deployment, including the involvement of police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) forces.

The CEC underscored the necessity of a unified effort, noting that the country has recently transitioned to a new administration. He stated that the commission is actively working to align all departments, asserting that the election will commence once the necessary operational readiness is achieved across all security sectors.

While the Election Commission maintains the authority to set election dates in consultation with the government, the CEC noted that multiple external factors must be evaluated. These include prevailing weather patterns, the monsoon season, potential flooding, major religious festivals such as Durga Puja, and the academic calendars for public examinations.

Addressing recent discussions with the Inspector General of Police, the CEC explained that the commission inquired about the national security situation and the specific capacity of the police force to provide personnel for election duties. He added that the commission provided specific recommendations to the police during the meeting.

The CEC expressed confidence in the upcoming electoral process, pledging that the local government elections will be conducted to a high standard. He stated that the commission aims to exceed the performance of previous national elections and hopes to achieve this through the collective cooperation of all relevant parties.
