Border Guard Bangladesh arrests Indian national after cross-border shootout in Barlekha

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops engaged in an armed confrontation with a group of suspected Indian smugglers along the Barlekha border in Moulvibazar late Thursday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. in the Kumarshail border area. During the clash, BGB personnel apprehended an injured Indian national identified as 32-year-old Bolai Namashudra, a resident of Gobindapur village under the Karimganj police station in the Indian state of Assam.
Upon searching the suspect, BGB recovered one pistol, two rounds of ammunition, and 500 yaba tablets. Following the encounter, the suspect was handed over to the local police after a formal case was filed against him.
According to the BGB’s 52nd Battalion, the patrol team launched a special operation following intelligence reports indicating that a smuggling ring was attempting to transport narcotics and illicit weapons across the border. When BGB personnel intercepted the group, the smugglers initiated an attack, prompting the guards to return fire in self-defense. While other members of the group managed to flee under the cover of darkness, Namashudra was captured during the pursuit.
Lieutenant Colonel Ataur Rahman, commander of the BGB’s 52nd Battalion, confirmed that a group of three to four individuals had infiltrated the Kumarshail area. He stated that the BGB challenged the group, leading to an exchange of fire, after which the suspect was apprehended and processed through legal channels.
Moniruzzaman Khan, officer-in-charge of the Barlekha Police Station, confirmed that a criminal case has been registered in connection with the arrest. BGB authorities have intensified intelligence operations to identify and track the remaining members of the smuggling ring who escaped the scene.
