Bangladeshi businessman shot near Rohingya refugee camp in Coxs Bazar

A 30-year-old Bangladeshi businessman was shot and wounded on Friday at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, following a dispute over financial transactions. The victim, Obaidul Haque, was targeted outside a mosque at Camp 14 in Palangkhali as he exited Juma prayer services.

Haque, a resident of Chorkhola village in Palangkhali, sustained a gunshot wound to his right ankle. He was initially transported to the MSF hospital at the Kutupalong camp. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Witnesses and local community leaders indicated that the shooting followed a long-standing personal dispute and a disagreement over outstanding debts between Haque and a Rohingya man identified as Mohammad Yunus. During a confrontation outside the mosque, Yunus allegedly identified himself as a camp commander belonging to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

According to eyewitness accounts, Yunus directed a group of 10 to 15 armed men to the scene. One member of the group fired at Haque, striking his ankle. The assailants then fired several warning shots into the air before fleeing toward the nearby forest.

Jahangir Alam, the victim’s brother, has called for a thorough investigation into the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Police and security officials have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, including why the Bangladeshi national was attending prayers inside the refugee facility. Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman stated that law enforcement is currently conducting operations to apprehend the suspects.

Riaz Uddin Ahmed, acting commanding officer of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn), which oversees camp security, reported that patrols have been increased to maintain order. Officials described the current situation at the camp as stable.

Local government representative M Gafur Uddin Chowdhury, chairman of the Palangkhali Union Parishad, expressed concern over the rising prevalence of illegal firearms within the refugee settlements. He urged security forces to intensify efforts to recover illicit weapons and curb armed activities in the area.
