Bangladesh Unity Federation of Los Angeles outlines strategic plan to strengthen community cohesion and leadership

LOS ANGELES — The Bangladesh Unity Federation of Los Angeles (BUFLA), an umbrella organization representing 31 Bangladeshi-American associations in Southern California, has unveiled a new strategic roadmap aimed at fostering community cohesion, increasing youth and female participation, and enhancing institutional accountability.
The initiative was presented during the federation’s first general meeting of the new term, held Friday night at the BUFLA headquarters in Los Angeles. The four-hour assembly brought together the executive committee, board of trustees, advisory council members, and representatives from the federation’s 31 member organizations to outline organizational priorities for the coming period.
BUFLA President Elias M. Sikdar emphasized that the federation must transcend individual agendas, operating instead as a collective platform that reflects the contributions of generations of community members. “BUFLA is not an organization for any single person or cabinet; it belongs to the entire community,” Sikdar stated during his ‘State of the Federation’ address. He stressed that while internal debate is natural, it must remain grounded in mutual respect and adherence to the federation’s constitution.
The leadership introduced a primary governance goal: the establishment of a Financial Oversight Committee. This body will be tasked with ensuring transparency in fiscal management, including the oversight of rental income, expenses related to the annual Bangladesh Day Parade, and charitable expenditures. The federation intends to staff this committee with a blend of seasoned financial experts and young volunteers to balance professional rigor with innovative engagement.
General Secretary Syed Nasir Jebul outlined five core pillars for the new term: unity, social and humanitarian outreach, youth development, fiscal accountability, and inclusive participation. Jebul noted that the organization seeks to move beyond event-based activities to provide tangible support for community members in crisis or financial distress.
A significant focus was placed on the next generation of Bangladeshi-Americans. The leadership plans to implement mentorship programs, professional networking opportunities, and leadership development initiatives, including the California Bangladeshi Youth Convention, to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and modern civic engagement. Additionally, the federation plans to introduce a unified “community calendar” to better coordinate the activities of various local groups and serve as a central hub for Southern California’s Bangladeshi community.
Concluding the meeting, the leadership reiterated that the success of the new cabinet would be measured not by individual achievements, but by the tangible impact of their collective work. The meeting was attended by a broad cross-section of the community, including notable figures such as Daud Bafatia, Dr. Russell Mahmud Jewel, Khorshed Alam Ratan, Masuk Al Raihan, Shayla Rumi, Mahbub Khan, Ziaur Rahman, and several other community leaders and representatives.
