Narsingdi grandfather issues public warning via loudspeaker against lending money to grandson

A 72-year-old man in Narsingdi’s Monohardi Upazila has taken the unusual step of using a public address system to warn his neighbors against lending money to his grandson, citing years of financial exploitation.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Paikan village, located within the Borochapa Union. A video of the public announcement, recorded from a battery-operated auto-rickshaw traveling through the village, has since circulated widely on social media.

The man, identified as Karam Ali Bepari, issued a formal warning to the local community to cease all financial dealings with his 22-year-old grandson, Mahabub Mia. The announcement explicitly instructed local shopkeepers and residents not to lend money or provide mobile devices to his grandson, warning that anyone who continues to facilitate such transactions will face a formal police complaint.

According to residents, the measure was taken after years of alleged financial misconduct by Mahabub. The grandson reportedly incurred debts at local shops and with various individuals, consistently holding his grandfather responsible for the repayment. Karam Ali Bepari, who supports his family through the sale of goats, stated that he has been forced to settle these debts repeatedly to avoid public humiliation.

Karam Ali Bepari alleged that his grandson recently lost 60,000 taka in a gambling venture. While the grandfather managed to pay 50,000 taka of the debt, he remains unable to pay the remaining balance, leading to ongoing harassment. He described the situation as unbearable, prompting his decision to broadcast the warning publicly to distance himself from his grandson’s financial liabilities.

Sultan Uddin, chairman of the Borochapa Union Parishad, confirmed the situation, noting that the elderly man had reached a breaking point due to the grandson’s habit of leveraging his grandfather’s name to secure credit. The local administration acknowledged the unusual nature of the warning as a desperate attempt by the grandfather to insulate himself from his grandson’s mounting debts.
