Fifty-four bags of state-allocated fertilizer stolen from Chuadanga Sadar Upazila complex

CHUADANGA — Authorities have launched an investigation after 54 bags of non-urea fertilizer went missing from a storage site at the Chuadanga Sadar Upazila Parishad complex. The theft was discovered on Sunday during a scheduled distribution of government-subsidized agricultural inputs to local farmers.
The missing shipment was part of a larger procurement of 2,700 bags of fertilizer, including 1,350 bags of DAP and 1,350 bags of MOP, acquired from the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) in June. Due to a lack of designated warehouse facilities, the supplies were stored near a local mosque within the administrative complex, covered only by polyethylene sheets.
When distribution began on Sunday morning, officials realized the inventory was short by 54 bags. Facing immediate outcry from local farmers, the Upazila Agriculture Office sourced replacement fertilizer from local dealers to ensure the distribution program could be completed by Sunday evening.
Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Anisur Rahman filed a general diary with the Chuadanga Sadar Police Station on Sunday night regarding the theft. In response, the department has formed a three-member probe committee led by Additional Agriculture Officer Shahinuzzaman to determine how the supplies were removed. Night guards stationed at the complex reportedly could not account for the missing stock.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tithi Mitra confirmed that a secondary investigation committee will be established by the Upazila administration on Monday to further examine the security lapse. Officials noted that the lack of secure, permanent storage facilities for agricultural inputs remains a critical challenge for the department.
