Heavy Rainfall and Intense Thunderstorms Lash Dhaka as Meteorological Department Forecasts Continued Wet Weather

Heavy rainfall and intense lightning struck the capital on Monday night, causing widespread waterlogging across the city. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 35 millimeters of rainfall, with the downpour intensifying significantly around midnight after beginning in the early evening.
The sudden surge in activity followed a three-day dry spell across the capital. Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman explained that the recent lack of rain allowed the ground and lower atmospheric layers to become excessively warm. During the monsoon season, high levels of humidity are transported from the Bay of Bengal, and this moisture accumulates in the atmosphere during breaks in precipitation.
According to Rahman, when warm, humid air rises rapidly due to local atmospheric disturbances or wind convergence, it forms dense, heavy clouds, which are the primary triggers for thunderstorms. He noted that the intense lightning observed during Monday’s storm resulted from strong vertical air currents within these large thunderclouds, where colliding ice crystals and water droplets cause a separation of electrical charges.
Regarding the immediate forecast, the BMD has predicted rain in many areas across the Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, and Sylhet divisions, with a higher concentration of precipitation expected in coastal regions. The probability of further rainfall in the capital remains relatively low for Tuesday.
Looking ahead, meteorological data indicates the potential formation of a low-pressure system in the sea between Tuesday and Wednesday, though it is not expected to trigger significant rainfall. However, forecasters anticipate an increase in precipitation starting Thursday, with scattered showers likely to persist across various parts of the country throughout the following week.
