Blooming Chandroprabha flowers transform Moulvibazar town into golden landscape

A vibrant spectacle of yellow has transformed the northern perimeter of the Moulvibazar Government High School field, as a row of Chandraprava trees currently draped in golden blossoms captivates passersby along Syed Mujtaba Ali Road. The influx of bright, bell-shaped flowers has created a striking visual contrast against the urban backdrop of the town.
The blossoms, which stretch from the eastern edge of the field toward the M. Saifur Rahman Auditorium, appear particularly vivid following recent rainfall. The heavy clusters of yellow flowers have caused several branches to arch toward the ground, creating a sensory-rich environment filled with the sounds of bees and insects moving between the blooms.
Despite the scenic appeal, the site faces challenges from visitors. On Thursday morning, some individuals were observed using bamboo poles to harvest flowers, resulting in broken branches. Meanwhile, fallen petals carpeted the nearby walls and green grass, adding to the aesthetic display.
The planting of these trees was initiated several years ago by the late Nurur Rahman, a Canada-based expatriate who sought to green the city. His efforts were supported by local cultural organizer and physician M.A. Ahad, as well as retired principal and author Md. Abdul Khalik. Local municipal and school authorities also contributed to the ongoing preservation of the saplings, which were originally protected with bamboo enclosures and provided with irrigation systems.
Known scientifically for its bell-shaped, bright yellow flowers, the Chandraprava—also referred to as Sonapati or Gold Leaf—is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub that typically reaches heights of 10 to 15 feet. Although native to the Americas, the species has become well-established in the region, prized for its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. As the morning sun continues to highlight the golden hues against the clear autumn sky, the trees remain a prominent natural landmark in the heart of Moulvibazar.
