Worker killed by pick-up, 4 autorickshaws overturned

A construction worker was killed after being hit by a speeding pickup van in Kotbazar station area of Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road. The accident took place yesterday Sunday afternoon around 1:30 am. At least four autorickshaws were crushed by the pickup van while escaping.
The name of the deceased construction worker is Rabiul Islam (22). He is the son of Abul Hoshain of Ward No. 8 of Matarbari Union of Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. When he was taken to Ukhia Upazila Health Complex with serious injuries, the doctor on duty there declared him dead.
Police and eyewitnesses said that renovation work was going on in the Kotbazar section of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road after 12 o’clock in the night. Some workers including Rabiul were working there. Rabiul was crossing the road with a cement block on his head around 1:30 am. At that time, the pick-up van, which was going to Teknaf, hit him hard.
After the accident, the driver fled the spot with the pickup van. According to eyewitnesses, while escaping, the driver proceeded to push whatever was in front of him. Local people tried to stop the pickup van by barricading some CNG-powered and battery-powered auto-rickshaws in front of the Ukhia police station gate, about five kilometers away from Kotbazar area. But the pickup van didn’t stop there either; Instead, four autorickshaws lurched forward. Later, the driver left the pickup van in the Nayapara area of Hoikang Union in Teknaf and fled away.
Amin Sharif, a businessman of Ukhia Sadar, who witnessed the incident, said that the pickup went on a rampage on the highway while escaping. What he got in front, he pushed. This spread panic in the area.
Mohammad Haroon, a businessman from Kotbazar area, said, “We could not stop the pickup even by chasing it on a motorcycle. The car damaged several vehicles while fleeing at high speed.
Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahpari Highway Police Station, said that with the help of locals, the pickup was seized from Nayapara area of Hoikang Union in Teknaf, about 30 kilometers away from the scene. But the driver escaped. The process of identifying him and arresting him is going on.
