‘Women in Art’ celebrates the creative contribution of women artists

Dhaka American Women’s Club (DAWC) ‘Women in Art’ fundraising event was held with the participation of women artists, art collectors, philanthropists and prominent people from the diplomatic and cultural arena.
Last Tuesday, Gulshan Club’s Crystal Palace Hall celebrated the creative contribution of the emerging and renowned women artists of the country through their artworks. Apart from this, funds are collected for various non-profit organizations working with women and children.
Organized for the fourth time, ‘Women in Art’ has already become one of DAWC’s signature initiatives. Combining art and human welfare, this event is strengthening the various social development initiatives of Bangladesh besides highlighting the work of women artists on a larger scale.
This year’s event showcased the artworks of 35 established and emerging women artists of the country. Among them were Ekushey Medalist artists Kanak Champa Chakma and Rokeya Sultana. Curated by Artefactum gallerist Rumana Habib, the collection highlights the diversity, creativity and growing influence of women artists in contemporary art practice in Bangladesh.
Participating artists are Afroza Akhtari, Aida Quader, Alia Kamal, Aparajita Rahman, Asma Akbar, Azizi Faomi Khan, Farin Ahmed, Farhana Afroz, Faria Hossain Tuli, Farzana Islam Milki, Farzana Rahman Bobby, Gulshan Hossain, Kanak Champa Chakma, Kuhu, Maqsuda Iqbal Nipa, Mocha. Shaila Akhtar, Mukti Bhowmik, Noor Munzerin Rimzhim, Nusrat Jahan Najli, Omi Islam, Prema Nazia Anadalib, Priyan Iqbal, Rebecca Noman Neela, Rebecca Sultana, Rehana Yasmin, Rokeya Sultana, Rubina Akhtar, Rupshree Hajong, Samia Rashid Hai, Saria Saguaro, Shahreen Hossain, Shakirun Nahar Kanan, Sharmin Akhtar Lina, Subarna Morsheda and Vinita Karim.
Alongside the silent auction, a panel discussion titled ‘Beyond the Canvas: Women Shaping Art and Culture’ was held. It was attended by Nusrat Mahmood, co-founder of Brihat Art Foundation and Tayeba Begum Lippi, one of the most prominent contemporary artists of Bangladesh and co-founder and trustee of Britto Arts Trust. His artworks have been featured in prestigious institutions and exhibitions around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, Kunsthaus Zurich, Venice Biennale and Documenta Fifteen.
The event was sponsored by ‘Maya’, one of the natural wellness brands of Square Toiletries Limited. One of the sponsors was Eastern Bank Plc. The art partner was Artefactum.
DAWC vice president. Ambrin Lakhani Mirali said, ‘Women artists of Bangladesh are giving birth to new discussions in important areas of art practice in the country and outside the country. Through Women in Art we want to honor their contribution, while at the same time connecting the scope of art to the greater good of society by supporting programs for women and children.’
All the money collected from the event will be spent on the activities of various non-profit organizations working for the development of women and children in Bangladesh.
Founded in the seventies, Dhaka American Women’s Club (DAWC) is a voluntary organization working for the welfare of women and children in Bangladesh through cultural exchange, social engagement and fundraising.
