US Ambassador Discusses Trade and Investment Expansion During First Official Visit to Sylhet

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen visited Sylhet this week, signaling a strategic effort to bolster bilateral ties and deepen economic cooperation between the two nations. The visit, which marks the ambassador’s first official trip to the region, focused on expanding trade opportunities, investment, and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
During a courtesy meeting held at the Grand Sylhet Hotel and Resort, hosted by Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, discussions centered on the significant contributions of the Sylheti diaspora in the United States. Minister Muktadir noted that the dialogue encompassed a broad range of topics, including tourism development, digital technology integration, and the potential for increased American investment in the Sylhet region. The minister expressed confidence that these high-level engagements are essential for accelerating economic collaboration and reinforcing the friendly relations between the two countries.
Ambassador Christensen also met with Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury at the City Bhaban. During their exchange, the ambassador reiterated the U.S. commitment to encouraging higher education opportunities for Bangladeshi students. He lauded the region’s natural beauty, specifically highlighting its tea gardens and hilly landscapes, while expressing a keen interest in understanding local developmental challenges and investment prospects.
The ambassador’s itinerary included a tour of historical landmarks, such as the iconic Keen Bridge, Ali Amjad’s Clock, and Chandni Ghat. His visit concluded with a cultural component, where he enjoyed local culinary specialties, including Sylhet’s famous seven-layer tea, and attended a concert performed by U.S. Marines near the Ali Amjad Clock tower.
In addition to his official meetings, Ambassador Christensen held a courtesy call with the Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, at the Sylhet Circuit House. Throughout his stay, the ambassador was accompanied by a delegation of local officials, including city administrators and representatives from regional development authorities, to discuss the intersection of American technological expertise and local industrial growth.
